• $350 to $500. Usually a newer artist building a portfolio, or a salon working from a small set of stock brow shapes. Touch-up almost always charged separately.
• $550 to $800. The Sydney middle, and where most established salons sit. Experienced artist, decent pigment, shorter mapping time.
• $900 to $1,500. Master artists and trainers. Longer appointments, custom pigment mixing, full facial mapping, and usually correction work included in the skill set.

Why the same treatment can cost three times as much

Five things move the price, and only one of them is the salon's postcode.

• Who is holding the tool. Years of practice, which academy they trained with, and whether they are qualified to train other artists.
• Time in the chair. A proper first session runs 2.5 to 3 hours, and most of that is mapping and shape design before any pigment goes in. A 90 minute appointment is a shortcut somewhere.
• Pigment. Mixed to your undertone, or straight out of one bottle for everybody. This is what decides whether your brows fade warm, grey or stay true.
• Whether a perfecting session is part of the plan. Almost every brow needs a second pass at 6 to 8 weeks. Ask whether that is quoted or extra.
• Correction work. Going over an old tattoo takes longer and needs more skill than a blank brow, and it is priced accordingly.

Microblading, ombre or hybrid: what actually differs

Microblading uses a hand tool to cut fine hair strokes into the skin. It gives the most natural, feathery result and suits normal to dry skin. It typically lasts 12 to 18 months.

Ombre or powder brows are done with a machine, building soft shading that looks like brow powder. It holds much better on oily skin and generally lasts longer than microblading alone.

Hybrid Brows are microblading first, then machine shading over the top. You get the hair-stroke texture and the durability of shading together. At Spa Mosman these last 18 to 24 months, which is why most of our clients choose them.

One honest warning. If your skin is oily, microblading on its own is usually the wrong choice. The strokes blur into a soft shadow within months and you end up paying twice.

Work out the cost per year, not the cost per appointment
